How to Get Rid of Soil, Clippings and Other Garden Waste

soil and garden waste

As the weather gets a little warmer we all start to pay more attention to our gardens, perhaps starting a new project ready to enjoy in the summer. Whether you’re carrying out a full garden clearance and starting from scratch, or simply tidying up a little bit, it can be hard to know what to do with garden waste. In this article, we’re going to answer some of the most common questions when it comes to garden rubbish removal.

What is green waste?

Green waste, or garden waste, is any natural waste from your garden such as grass; garden clippings from flowers, leaves and twigs; weeds; slag; soil; turf and lawn. Rather than putting these materials in the black bin and sending them straight to landfill, it is much more beneficial to leave them in the hands of a professional waste management company who will ensure they are disposed of properly.

Can you burn garden waste?

Garden fires are sometimes allowed, depending on your council, but you can be fined thousands of pounds if they are too frequent or affect road traffic – plus, a lot of green waste (grass, soil, rubble etc.) will only smoke, not burn.

Garden waste collection

Some councils offer a home collection service for garden waste, but this differs between locations. Not all services will accept certain types of green waste, and there is often a charge.

Can you take soil and garden waste to the tip?

Again, it depends on your local services, but some recycling centres will take soil and garden waste – however, there may be restrictions on which materials can be disposed of, and you’ll often have to pay a charge, on top of any travel time and expenses.

Can you put garden waste in a skip?

Yes, most skip companies are happy to collect garden waste and soil, and the service doesn’t require a subscription, travel time or researching complicated legalities.

Hiring a garden waste skip

Hiring a skip is probably the best way to dispose of garden waste – most skip hire companies will accept garden waste. Wondering how to get rid of soil? That can usually go in a skip along with green waste, too.

What’s more, if you are having a full garden clearance or taking on a landscaping project which will involve getting rid of hard materials, you can also put materials such as stones, concrete and breeze blocks in a skip. By opting for a skip on the larger end of the scale, you can avoid going back and forth to the recycling centre or waiting for periodical bin collections, and simply have all your waste picked up on a convenient, pre-agreed date.

What to do with old turf

If you are getting rid of old turf, you can usually take it to your recycling centre. A simpler option, however, might be to put it in a skip with household or green waste – most skip hire companies will accept turf along with other garden waste.

Although hiring a skip may be seen as the pricier option, it is often actually the best value for money if you consider how much waste you need to get rid of. Plus, it cuts out any time spent on trips to the recycling centre or waiting for the council to collect your bin, leaving you time to focus on the project at hand. When handing your waste over to the professionals, you can guarantee that it will be dealt with in a responsible manner, which is better for the environment and therefore your peace of mind.
